DETAILS

F.P. Journe's watches clearly belong in the category of collector’s watches, but that does not prevent François-Paul Journe from making essentially pragmatic choices in the manufacture of his watches.Practical solutions give collector’s watches a special appeal, which is particularly evident in the watches in the sporty LineSport collection. This collection was launched in 2011 thanks to a private order from an important collector who asked F.P. Journe for a lightweight sports watch. To make the watch, then called Centigraphe Sport, really light, the case and bracelet were made of an aluminum alloy with rubber inserts that act as shock absorbers. Aluminum is softer than other metals often used in the watch industry. The use of such shock absorbers therefore makes perfect sense, as otherwise the watch would have to be extensively restored after a certain period of active use, as is usually the case for a sports watch. In addition to the case and bracelet, the movement of the Centigraphe Sport is also made from an aluminum alloy, which is one of the lightest metals used in the manufacture of watch movements. In addition to their purely technical function, the rubber buffers give the watch a decidedly sporty look with a contrasting and very elegant combination of shiny metal and matt black rubber elements, including the side buffers of the bracelet links, the buffers of the case, and the winding crown with rubber coating. In 2012, the Centigraphe Sport model was supplemented by the LineSport Automatique Réserve watch, which is also made from an aluminum alloy.

REASONS TO BUY

The LineSport Automatique Réserve ‘The First Generation, Titanium’ is of interest to collectors not only as a F.P. Journe watch, but also as a watch that belongs to the brand’s line of light, slim and sporty watches. The combination of a titanium case and bracelet and an aluminum caliber is typical of the LineSport collection, which has been around since 2014, while the first-generation design version, complemented by sporty rubber buffers, has not been available since 2019. This is a short production run for the brand's collection, which undoubtedly adds to the appeal of this watch. Moreover, the exceptional aluminum caliber is in itself an attractive point for a collector, as F.P. Journe is the only haute horlogerie brand that regularly produces watches with such a movement.

ABOUT THIS WATCH

In 2014, F.P. Journe introduced new titanium versions of the pair, which remained the same in terms of design and mechanics, but with titanium proving to be a much more durable metal compared to aluminum. The LineSport Automatique Réserve in titanium retained the same sleek, sporty character, but was modernized with a dark grey aluminum dial that complements the dark grey tones of the black-coated titanium case and bracelet. The dial is highlighted by red accents, from the large date numerals at 1 o’clock to the red and white day/night indicator at 9 o'clock, the small seconds at 6 o'clock, the lower part of the power reserve indicator at 10 o'clock and the “S” in the “OctaS” logo at 12 o'clock. This design is known as the first-generation Ref. ARS, which appears to have been produced until 2019. The second-generation models launched in 2018 were the Centigraphe Sport Titanium and Automatique Réserve Titanium with yellow dials, which retained the rubber inserts but were fitted with a ceramic bezel instead of the titanium bezel of the first-generation model. The third-generation watches followed almost immediately: The following year, 2019, F.P. Journe presented the Centigraphe Sport and Automatique Réserve in platinum or rose gold versions with a black dial and white counters, but without the rubber inserts – on the case, for example, the rubber decoration was replaced by polished metal parts. This LineSport Automatique Réserve is a first-generation model whose production has been discontinued, which certainly contributes to its appeal. It is, of course, a fully-fledged F.P. Journe product with the high collector’s value inherent in all F.P. Journe releases. The unique qualities of this watch are the all-black design, which is extremely rare for the brand’s watches and gives the watch maximum sportiness, and the unique heritage of the first-generation titanium models – the black rubber buffers, which give the design a particularly elegant touch. It is well known that F.P. Journe has been producing all of its calibers (well, almost all of them) in 18k rose gold since 2004. The LineSport in titanium is that “almost” – the bridges and mainplate of its caliber 1300.3 are made of lightweight aluminum, while the unidirectional rotor, decorated with a Côtes circulaires pattern and an engraved brand logo and LineSport collection emblem, is made of titanium to which a heavy tungsten segment has been added. The rotor is slightly off-centered, a feature of the F.P. Journe Octa calibers, which together with the aluminum alloy execution, gives the movement its unique character.
