DETAILS

Hautlence (an anagram of Neuchâtel, the city where the brand was founded) was founded in 2004, at a time when there was perhaps the greatest interest in start-ups offering watches with exceptional complications, and fully lived up to this description of its specialty. The HL01, the brands first design, offered an intricate and difficult to read combination of discrete jumping digital hour and retrograde minute displays in a case that looked like a television screen. After a tumultuous launch at Baselworld 2004 (in a small hall nearby – a common scenario for a newly established brand, as the prices for exhibition space at Baselworld can be shocking), the routine of the luxury watch business began. Guillaume Tetu, Renaud de Retz and Sandro Reginelli, the brand’s founders, were unable to keep the brand afloat, so it ended up in the hands of MELB Holding in 2012. Since then, it has belonged to the same family as H. Moser & Cie and is also managed by Edouard Meylan. After a few years of a slow start, during which Edouard Meylan focused mainly on the development of H. Moser & Cie, Hautlence began to show its former creativity, which was ultimately an excellent, if belated, justification for keeping the brand.

REASONS TO BUY

This Hautlence Sphere Sapphire Piece Unique in white gold is definitely a watch that is highly remarkable and will be remembered forever. The spherical hour display is one of the most unexpected and mysterious complications to be found in a modern wristwatch. In terms of spectacularity, it is comparable to the tourbillon, the eternal leader in the genre of dynamic complications. The way in which the time is displayed is unique and is appropriately complemented by the unique execution of the Sphere Sapphire Piece Unique with a white gold case and the inlay of baguette sapphires around the edge of the dial, making this watch even more exclusive and desirable.

ABOUT THIS WATCH

Perhaps the most impressive development of the new Hautlence period is the HL Sphere, one of the headliners of Baselworld 2019, the last Baselworld. Ironically, Hautlence continues to evolve reliably, while Baselworld will soon be remembered only by industry veterans. Although an entirely new caliber was developed for the HL Sphere, initially called the HTL501-1 (known as the A80 in the version for the Sphere Series 1 and Sphere Series 2 models), it essentially retained the functionality of the HL01, the brand’s first design. The retrograde minute display is complemented by a mysterious sphere mounted in a spherical cavity with numerals on it – it’s the same discrete digital hour display, but in 3D. The driving mechanism is of course completely different, this is all about function. The HTL501-1 was developed on the basis of the H. Moser & Cie main gear and escapement and has a solid 72-hour power reserve.

The main feature of this Sphere Sapphire Piece Unique in white gold is the spherical hour display, which magically rotates to the right at the start of each hour with the help of four conical gear wheels, where the actual hour numeral is located.
