DETAILS
The extremely attractive, complicated and rare 18k rose gold Girard-Perregaux Tourbillon with Three Gold Bridges Ref. 99285 is powered by the automatic GP9600 caliber. The special feature of this watch and its caliber is the unique design found only on Girard-Perregaux tourbillon watches, with three gold bridges open on the dial side. This design goes back to the pocket watch movement invented in 1867 by Constant Girard, one of the brand's founding fathers. To give the movement a unique look, he came up with the idea of placing three gold bridges evenly on the mainplate of the movement. The design of the movement was patented by Constant Girard in the USA in 1884 (design patent no. 14919), and in 1889 the luxurious Esmeralda pocket watch with tourbillon and three gold bridges was awarded a gold medal at the Paris World Exhibition. in 1981, Girard-Perregaux launched a limited edition of 20 pocket watches with tourbillon and three gold bridges in honor of the brand's 190th anniversary. In 1986, on the eve of its 200th anniversary, the brand once again began developing commemorative wristwatches with a tourbillon and three gold bridges, which was completed in 1991 with the release of the first Tourbillon sous trois Ponts d’Or wristwatch. In Girard-Perregaux tourbillon wristwatches, these three gold bridges are generally not located on the back of the movement, but on the dial side, which makes the appearance of the tourbillon watch esthetically pleasing and impressive and distinguishes it from the tourbillons of all other brands.

This watch is an impressive showpiece of Girard-Perregaux's craftsmanship, which has succeeded in translating its most famous iconic design into a wristwatch. The design with tourbillon and three gold bridges is entirely in the tradition of Haute Horlogerie and is still incomparable. At the same time, the comfortable case size of 40 mm and the undisputed relevance of the design and first-class finishing make this watch a pleasure to wear, while the mysterious “secret” mini-rotor automatic system makes it possible to wear this watch every day.
ABOUT THIS WATCH
Tourbillon with Three Gold Bridges Ref. 99285, launched in 2017, belongs to the series of Girard-Perregaux tourbillons with a mini-rotor self-winding movement. The self-winding GP9600 caliber of the Ref. 99285, a second-generation movement, was developed in 1999 as a modification of the original hand-wound GP9000 caliber. The mini-rotor is cleverly placed on the movement at 12 o'clock, coaxially above the winding barrel, resulting in a mysterious appearance where the automatic caliber looks exactly like a hand-wound movement at first glance. As soon as you pick up the watch, the mini-rotor moves due to gravity and the mystery is solved. This unusual arrangement requires an reversed hand setting system, so that in both the GP9600 caliber and many of its clones, the hour hand is above the minute hand, as opposed to a conventional movement design where the minute hand is on top.
The caliber GP9600 of this watch is finely crafted by hand in each of its parts, including the three arrow-shaped bridges in rose gold with smooth, slightly rounded bevels and a hand polishing of all surfaces. An attractive feature of this Ref. 99285 is the slightly arched profile of the gold bridges, which undoubtedly makes the traditional design appear more modern and dynamic. This innovation is also matched by the shape of the gold bridges, which is more laconic compared to the original design patented in 1884.
The parts of the tourbillon carriage are finished with hand-polished chamfers, while the top of the tourbillon carriage is finely brushed and the sharp edges are preserved. The tourbillon carriage has a characteristic shape with three arches and two prongs, known as the Perregaux tourbillon, which was classified by Reinhard Meiss as a tourbillon type in its own right, just like the designs of other important tourbillon makers of the 19th and 20th centuries. Both the carriage and the openworked mini-rotor have carefully shaped and polished sharp inner and outer corners, which are considered one of the most valuable assets of fine watchmaking. In addition, the mainplate of the GP9600 is decorated with line guilloché, rhodium-plated and has hand-applied graining, with the chamfers polished by hand and the recesses finished with perlage. The screw heads are properly polished, the tourbillon screws and the index are made of blued steel.
