DETAILS

Since the beginning of its activity, Urwerk has developed the design on the basis of the wandering hour complication. The first models UR-101 and UR-102 equipped with such a time display were introduced in 1997. The development of the UR-103 took several years and the first timepieces were presented by the brand in 2003. This watch belongs to the first generation of the UR-103, known as the UR-103.01, which is widely regarded as the starting point for the brand’s success. With the UR-103.01, Urwerk achieved worldwide fame and at the same time established its supremacy in the production of watches with a wandering hour complication, which have become synonymous and symbolic of the brand. Connoisseurs of fine watchmaking and independent watchmakers embraced the watch with great enthusiasm, and many still consider it to be Urwerk’s finest design.

REASONS TO BUY

This UR-103.01 ER seems like a great opportunity to acquire an iconic wristwatch launched by an up-and-coming independent watchmaker in 2003, when the general passion for the creativity of independent watchmakers was just awakening. The Urwerk UR-103 is one of the most recognizable designs in modern "haute horlogerie". The undisputed advantage of the early Urwerk is its rarity. The UR-103.01 ER dates back to the very beginnings of the brand, which is why the number of models produced at that time is extremely small, including this watch, which is part of a limited edition of just 25 pieces in 18k rose gold.

ABOUT THIS WATCH

The caliber 3.03 was developed by Urwerk on the basis of the ultra-thin hand-wound caliber Eta/Peseux 7001. It was modified by a complication module developed by Urwerk for a two-sided time display with the wandering hour on the upper side of the watch and power reserve indicator, minutes and seconds on the reverse side. A notable feature of this movement, which Urwerk has since discontinued, is the ability to set the time to the second via the small minute dial (which repeats the minutes on the main dial) and the small seconds dial on the back. There is also a fine adjustment screw on the back of the case that acts on the index to change the frequency of the balance wheel. This allows the owner to adjust the accuracy of the watch himself and gain or lose up to 30 seconds per day.

The Urwerk watches from the early days of the brand are appreciated for their powerful aura, which is expressed in a laconic design that is now considered iconic. The basis of the design is a rectangular, lenticular profile with a rounded side that houses the time display. The domed window occupies a small part of the upper surface of the case, while the rest of the domed cover and the strong, wide lugs are covered with embossed stripes over the entire surface. A large winding crown on the opposite side of the time display window provides balance. The large, massive 46x36 mm case in 18k rose gold, considered a challenge to early 2000s tastes, fits the modern mood perfectly.
