DETAILS
Over the last thirteen years, the star-studded dials have become an integral part of De Bethune's history. The impressive dials are made of polished titanium that has been tempered to the dark blue hue of the midnight sky. Following the standard star chart, or in some cases individually according to a specific geographical location and date, the gold pins are placed one by one on the star-studded dial. The Milky Way pattern is made even more detailed by laser engraving and gilded using the traditional gold leaf technique. In 2011, this decorative dial was impressively presented in a unique DB25 watch produced for the Only Watch 2011 charity auction. Subsequently, this theme became mainstream in the De Bethune collection, but the watches with star-set dials have not become commonplace and have lost none of their freshness and appeal.
In 2018, the first Starry Varius was released – the DB25 Starry Varius Ref. DB25VTIS3, one of the most popular releases in the brand’s history. De Bethune reports that 142 examples have been produced in titanium since 2018 – an impressively small number when considering the global collector community, and an equally impressive figure when compared to the brand’s annual production volume, which is between 150 and 200 pieces. The success of this design prompted the brand to expand: 2019 saw the release of the DB25 Starry Varius Chronometre Tourbillon DB25VTTIS3 (10 pieces) and a year later the DB25 Starry Varius Ref. DB25VRS3 in 18k rose gold – this watch (according to De Bethune, 75 pieces were produced as of 2020). This was followed by the DB25 Starry Varius DB25VRDJS3 in 18k rose gold, diamond-set (2020, 12 pieces), the DB25 Starry Varius US Edition DB25VTIS5 with bronze-colored dial and star decoration with the Milky Way (2021, 10 pieces) and finally the DB25 Starry Varius EWC Edition DB25VTIS6 (2022, 10 pieces).
REASONS TO BUY
The DB25 “Zuck” Starry Varius Ref. DB25VRS3 is a rare De Bethune watch that got its nickname because it was chosen by a world-renowned celebrity. We can only support Mark “Zuck” Zuckerberg's decision, as this watch is outstanding in many ways: from the aura of exclusivity that surrounds every watch of this brand, which has an extremely limited annual production, to the unique design with an impressive starry decoration dial in polished titanium tempered to the dark blue tone of the midnight sky, to the high-quality hand-wound caliber DB2005, which embodies several De Bethune inventions with great elegance and craftsmanship.
ABOUT THIS WATCH
Before 2018, there were other versions of this design called Starry Sky or Milky Way. So why was this watch given the name Starry Varius? Legend has it that Denis Flageollet, the creative mind behind the brand, chose this name for two reasons. Firstly, to evoke the Stradivarius stringed instruments, and secondly, to weave into the name the idea that the watch can be ordered with different individual - various - star patterns on the dial.
The undisputed reason for the popularity of this reference is not only the spectacular, poetically filled dial, but of course the hand-wound caliber DB2005, which is visible through the sapphire caseback of the watch and contains an impressive array of patented and exclusive De Bethune features and inventions. The instantly recognizable shape of the barrel bridge, reminiscent of the emblem from the television series Star Trek, dominates the back of the movement, as does the unique triple shock protection system with flat steel fixing springs и carefully polished horizontal bridge that protects the balance pivots. This is a patented De Bethune invention, along with a blued titanium balance wheel with white gold inserts, a hairspring with a flat end curve and a self-regulating double barrel that ensures a 6-day power reserve.
A new contribution to the popularity of this watch was made recently – in September 2024 – by watch spotters who discovered the founder and CEO of Facebook Mark “Zuck” Zuckerberg wearing a similar DB25 Starry Varius Ref. DB25VRS3. From then on, this reference was known by the nickname “Zuck” – DB25 “Zuck” Starry Varius.
