DETAILS
Trilobe is one of the brands that avowedly question the traditional system of displaying time with hands. When you think about the history of watchmaking, it's easy to remember that the technique of telling the time in early mechanical clocks often involved a rotating ring system with numerals, while reading the time was done using a fixed index. Be that as it may, today the market for mechanical watches is dominated by models with a time display with hands, and against this backdrop the handless design of Trilobe certainly stands out. This brand is one of the newcomers that jumped on the wave of interest in luxury mechanical watches when super-tricky designs and unprecedented complications were beginning to lose their appeal and instead a star of watches with an unconventional, but not extravagant, concept began to rise. Gautier Massonneau, the founder of Trilobe, focused on the concept of a time display with three rotating rings that are not arranged coaxially. The brand and its first Les Matinaux collection were presented in Paris in December 2018. The early Les Matinaux watches were based on the X-Centric display module developed and manufactured for Trilobe by Jean-François Mojon and his movement manufacturer Chronode. The module was powered by the basic Eta 2892 caliber (probably in some models also by movements from Sellita), which was used in Trilobe watches for the first two years of the company’s existence.
REASONS TO BUY
This Trilobe Nuit Fantastique Secret Unique Piece is a very rare self-winding mechanical watch with a hands-free time display based on the three rotating rings system, which certainly sets this watch apart from other offerings on the market. Thestarry sky dial with three rotating rings system gives the watch an exceptional appearance, which is further enhanced by the unusual arrangement of the exclusive X-Centric caliber, developed and produced for Trilobe by movement manufacturer Le Cercle des Horlogers. The design of the dial is unique as it shows the view of the starry sky from a specific place at a specific time, giving the watch a fascinating, mysterious feel.
ABOUT THIS WATCH
Later, the brand relied on an exclusive caliber, which was also called X-Centric. This movement with a mini-rotor winding system was developed by the movement manufacturer Le Cercle des Horlogers, a specialist in mini-rotor calibers, and was officially launched in 2020. In 2021, the brand decided to create new dial design and make it more concise without changing the concept: this is how the Nuit Fantastique collection was born. In this design, the brand has kept the outer ring of the hour display, but the minutes are displayed in an opening, while the seconds wheel is located underneath. Following the example of previous Les Matinaux releases, the brand has introduced a special edition Nuit Fantastique Secret. The special thing about this “secret” edition is that the customer can order a watch with a unique version of the dial that shows the starry sky as it is seen from a certain place at a certain time, that is the secret of a watch. This view is indeed one of a kind, just like this Nuit Fantastique Secret watch on which it is depicted.
The X-Centric caliber, which can be seen through the sapphire caseback, is a clear example of modern industrial esthetics. This includes the monochrome silver-grey color scheme, the frosted finish of the bridges and mainplate, the linear brushing of the balance cock, the circular brushing of the wheels, the impressive colimaçonnage finish on the mini-rotor and the pronounced chamfer with sharp outer corners that appears to have been cut with a diamond cutter. The time indicator mechanism is driven by a ring-shaped central wheel without a pinion – an unusual and spectacular technical solution that considerably enhances the attractiveness of this movement and the watch.
