DETAILS

Patek Philippe began production of the Ref. 5074 in 2001 in yellow gold as the Ref. 5074J, with a matte black or opaline silver-plated dial, and continued this production until 2005, when the Ref. 5074R in rose gold with a matte black or opaline silver-plated dial was launched to replace the Ref. 5074J. Ref. 5074P-001 in platinum with a matte black dial (this watch) was produced from 2009. The Ref. 5074P is currently no longer in production. Its successor, Ref. 5374 in the classic Calatrava case, was introduced in 2016 with a platinum case and a black enamel dial. During its production period, a few diamond-set versions of the Ref. 5074 were also produced, known as the Ref. 5073.
In terms of style, the Ref. 5074 continues the tradition of Patek Philippe's complicated watches. The dial with the perpetual calendar counters is a direct allusion to the legendary Ref. 3940, including the “sunken” sub-dials, a tradition reminiscent of the Ref. 2499 and Ref. 1518 perpetual calendar chronograph watches. The cylindrical case of the Ref. 5074 with its wide, slightly sloping bezel immediately recalls the Ref. 5070 Chronograph, whose case diameter was also 42 mm. The lugs of the Ref. 5074 are unmistakably inspired by the design of the lugs of the Ref. 5070 and – in memory of the Geneva brand's design history – by the legendary Ref. 2499, with a subtle groove on the outer upper edge of the lugs. The continuation of tradition is an important feature of many watches in the Patek Philippe collection and is particularly evident in the Ref. 5074.
The caliber R27Q is also a continuation of the tradition, this time in complicated watch mechanics. The basic movement – the caliber R27 with a mini-rotor self-winding system and the classic minute repeater function with two hammers and two steel gongs surrounding the movement – was developed by the Geneva-based company in the 1980s as part of the preparations for its 150th anniversary, which was celebrated in 1989. The basic R27 PS movement with small seconds was used in the Ref. 3979 commemorative watch with minute repeater and a remarkably compact 33.5 mm diameter case. At the same time, a more complex modification without small seconds but with a perpetual calendar was developed and used in the Ref. 3974 with minute repeater and perpetual calendar – the predecessor of the Ref. 5074.
The calendar module and dial design of the Ref. 3974 are similar to those of the automatic perpetual calendar Ref. 3940, which was released four years earlier. The 36 mm case of the Ref. 3974 also has the same diameter as the Ref. 3940. Ref. 3974 was produced in very small numbers in 18k yellow, white, rose gold and platinum until 2000. Ref. 5074, which was launched in 2001, used the caliber with the same designation R27 Q, but was modified for Ref. 5074 – instead of the traditional minute repeater gongs, so-called cathedral gongs were installed. The length of the gong in a traditional repeater movement is up to one loop around the movement, whereas the cathedral type gongs go beyond the circumference and make at least one and a half, even up to two loops. This makes for a louder sound.

ABOUT THIS WATCH

The Ref. 5074P in platinum and with a matte black dial is considered a great classic of the Geneva watch brand and one of its iconic designs. The watch is undoubtedly relevant because of its rather large case – for Patek Philippe – when we analyze the Geneva-based manufacturer's complicated models, as the diameter of the Ref. 5074P is 42 mm. Minute repeaters in platinum are undoubtedly among the rarest of Patek Philippe watches and are primarily intended for reputable collectors and the brand’s best friends (customers). The undisputed advantage of this model is the combination of the two classic, complex functions of the perpetual calendar and the minute repeater, which are among the pinnacles of traditional watchmaking. Thanks to its automatic winding mechanism with a 22-carat gold mini-rotor decorated with a hand-guilloché grain d’orge (barleycorn), this timepiece can also be used as an everyday watch (although this is difficult to imagine).

The incredibly attractive minute repeater mechanism is partially visible through the sapphire caseback. Patek Philippe is one of the finest craftsmen when it comes to the design and traditional craftsmanship of calibers, so each piece is precious as a work of watchmaking art. The R27 Q stands out with its minute repeater hammers with spectacular black polish and a skeletonized Calatrava cross in solid gold above a centrifugal regulator for the repeater. When the repeater mechanism is activated, it first strikes the hour on the low-tuned gong, then the quarter hours with double strikes on the low-tuned and high-tuned gongs and finally the number of minutes that have elapsed since the last quarter hour on the high-tuned gong. When it comes to watches with acoustic functions, the top brands that produce repeater watches do not reject the use of platinum, even though platinum as an acoustic material in a watch case leads to a loss of sound volume. We do not see this as a disadvantage, but prefer to regard the platinum case as a kind of acoustic filter that blocks out parts of the acoustic spectrum, leaving those that produce the most pleasant sound for the human ear.
