DETAILS

This Ref. 5275P is a unique example of Patek Philippe’s craftsmanship, centered on the traditional digital jumping hour function, though this model is a much more complex timepiece. Watches with this complication have appeared only rarely in Patek Philippe’s long history. the immediate predecessor that inspired the inclusion of Ref. 5275P in the 175th anniversary collection was the Ref. 3969 jumping hour watch, launched in 1989 to commemorate the brand’s 150th anniversary. Ref. 3969 was released in a limited edition of 500 pieces—50 in platinum and 450 in 18k pink gold (references 3969P and 3969R). It features a jumping digital hour indicator and a common minute hand, but lacks a seconds indicator and chiming mechanism.

Ref. 3969, in turn, draws direct inspiration from an 18k yellow gold jump hour wristwatch from 1927, now displayed at the Patek Philippe Museum in Geneva. This historic watch is part of a series of presumably several dozen pocket watches and wristwatches produced in the 1920s and 1930s as a manifestation of the Art Deco style in complicated watches.

Ref. 5275P is the most recent Patek Philippe wristwatch to feature a jumping hour display, released in a limited edition of 175 pieces in platinum only to commemorate the company’s 175th anniversary.

REASONS TO BUY

This 175th Anniversary Chiming Jump Hour Ref. 5275P-001 in platinum offers discerning collectors the chance to acquire a horological masterpiece by Patek Philippe. It is housed in a cushion-shaped platinum case with a distinctive design and features a highly complex triple jumping system that advances the hours, minutes, and seconds, as well as a chiming hour – a combination of complications never before or since seen in a Patek Philippe watch. This anniversary edition displays floral relief engravings on the sides of the platinum case and on the solid 18k gold dial, complemented by guilloché with vertical lines and fillet sauté on a dial, making it truly unique and unmatched in the brand’s collection. Watches from this limited edition are extremely rare on the market due to the small production run, with the edition reportedly sold to the brand’s carefully selected circle of loyal customers and friends, who are reluctant to part with such a masterpiece.

The style of Ref. 5275P is truly stunning, thanks to its uncompromising blend of cutting-edge and traditional approaches. One such combination is the avant-garde movement, developed and used exclusively in just 175 pieces of the limited anniversary edition Ref. 5275P-001, paired with a cushion-shaped case featuring a traditional snap-on caseback. This caseback is engraved with the anniversary inscription “175e Anniversaire 1839 – 2014” and the “Patek Philippe Genève” logo, closely reproducing the engraved anniversary inscription from Ref. 3969 of 1989, the previous jubilee edition, of course with the date updated. It also recalls the tradition of engraved cuvettes on 19th-century pocket watches. Another nod to tradition is the solid platinum caseback, which obscures the owner’s view of the manual-winding caliber 32-650 HGS PS, a movement featuring a unique set of complications. However, this is unlikely to disappoint the owner, as it reasonably acknowledges the historic brand’s right to exercise its own design discretion.

ABOUT THIS WATCH

For the 2014 anniversary edition, Patek Philippe set a high standard by adding jumping (deadbeat) small seconds and jumping minute displays to the dial of Ref. 5275P, challenging themselves to flawlessly execute a triple jumping complication. The main challenge is synchronizing the three instantaneous movements so that the minute hand’s jump, advancing by one minute, coincides with the hour digit’s jump and, more importantly, with the seconds hand’s passage through 60. Technically, using a jumping minute hand (more accurately, a deadbeat-type motion minute hand, analogous to a deadbeat seconds hand) simplifies synchronization of the triple jumping action, but it does not make the movement itself any simpler. A similar but much simpler solution, featuring a jumping digital hour and a retrograde minute hand – where the minute hand’s backward jump naturally synchronized with the advancement of the hour digit – was demonstrated by the Gérald Genta brand in 1996.

On the reverse side, the caliber 32-650 HGS PS, the movement of Ref. 5275P, features a traditional layout with a curved central bridge, a separate winding gear bridge, and a traditionally shaped barrel bridge, similar to those found in some Patek Philippe pocket watches. The movement bears the Patek Philippe hallmark, confirming the brand’s high standards of precision, craftsmanship, and finishing, including bridges decorated with Côtes de Genève stripes, polished bevels, and engraved gilded inscriptions. The movement is immediately recognizable by two distinctive components: the black-polished hammer of the chiming mechanism and its steel wire gong encircling the movement. On the dial side, the traditional wheels, levers, and bridges of the jumping hour and minute mechanism contrast with the blue-colored silicon components used in the deadbeat seconds drive – one of the key solutions ensuring flawless operation of the triple jumping complication. An added feature is the chiming mechanism, which follows the instant advance of the digital hour display by striking a gong with a hammer, creating a melodic sound to mark the beginning of the hour. The gong can be silenced by a slide located on the case at 10 o’clock. The movement is assembled from 438 components; the 32-650 HGS PS is indeed a highly complex caliber.

Both the decorative and technical features of this watch vividly highlight the brand’s artistic approach to handcrafted watchmaking. The floral motif may initially seem unusual for most watches in the modern Patek Philippe collection. However, such ornate, hand-engraved motifs adorned the cases and dials of many pocket watches from the classic period of the company’s history, particularly a significant portion of 19th-century pocket watches displayed in the brand’s museum.
