DETAILS
Kross Studio is one of the most remarkable newcomers on the market for complicated mechanical luxury watches. The brand was founded in 2020 by Marco Tedeschi, who came from RJ–Romain Jerome, a brand that was known for its extraordinary and conceptual watch designs and went bankrupt in the same year. Marco Tedeschi was the CEO of RJ before the company was closed. Sergio Silva, the former production manager of Romain Jerome, also joined the Kross Studio team. The launch of this brand clearly showed that it had adopted RJ’s modus operandi when it came to creating conceptual designs and collaborations. The first wristwatch was the Disney-licensed Death Star Tourbillon, which is essentially an adapted version of the Arraw Spider-Man Tourbillon, one of RJ’s last designs that was announced for late 2019, but the brand went bankrupt before the watch went into production. According to Kross Studio, the movement with a central flying tourbillon and a peripheral time display system is a student development by Marco Tedeschi from 2006, when he was studying microtechnology at the École Technique de la Vallée de Joux (ETVJ). The technical development was finally completed in 2021 for the launch of the Death Star Tourbillon. In fact, Kross Studio began with a significant milestone by becoming the first watch brand to partner with the Star Wars franchise. Moreover, the brand is still the only one to exclusively offer watches with a central flying tourbillon. According to the brand, it manufactures its watches, including the production of the movement parts and the assembly of the movement, in its workshops in Gland, Switzerland.
REASONS TO BUY
This KS 05 Central Floating Tourbillon Titanium Turquoise Spider Piece Unique from the Swiss brand Kross Studioclearly stands out from other tourbillons on the market thanks to its unique functionality with a central flying tourbillon (as the name suggests) and a peripheral time display with hour and minute hands. The result is a design that is both traditional, thanks to the high domed crystal that reveals the beauty of the complication with the tourbillon cage at the top when viewed from above and from the side, and avant-garde, as the watch has no conventional winding crown and offers a purist look with a round pebble-shaped case in brushed titanium. At the same time, this watch has the advantage of a unique design with a rare and precious dial in spider turquoise, which makes it even more attractive.
ABOUT THIS WATCH
The construction of the MKS-7000 caliber and its clones, a hand-wound movement from Kross Studio tourbillon watches, is very unusual: the large barrel, which offers a power reserve of five days, is mounted on the central axis at the bottom of the watch (the technical principle used by Ulysse Nardin in its Freak watches), while the tourbillon is located at the top, also in the center. The hands are mounted on the periphery and rotate on ball bearings around the barrel and the tourbillon. This required a special system for winding and setting the hands with a D-ring mounted on the case back. It must be rotated to wind the mainspring or it turns the hands when the “Time set” button on the side of the case is pressed. The case has a round pebble shape, with no lugs or crown – so it is very reminiscent of the cases designed for Ikepod. An important addition to the design is the quick-change system for the strap with two buttons on the back of the case.
The KS 05 Central Floating Tourbillon Titanium Turquoise Spider, launched in 2023, is one of the first models to bear the brand's own design without being a product of collaboration or license. Its distinctive feature is a dial decorated with the rare Spider turquoise, while the other components have a decidedly calm technical character, including a brushed titanium case.
