DETAILS
Founded in 2010 by Laurent Ferrier, a veteran of the watch industry who worked at Patek Philippe for 37 years, and a keen racing driver, the brand has made a name for itself from the outset. The Galet Classic Tourbillon Double Spiral, the brand’s first watch, was awarded the “Men’s Watch” prize at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève in 2010. In 2012, Laurent Ferrier launched its first automatic watch equipped with the specially developed FBN229.01 caliber with mini-rotor. In addition to the mini-rotor, the most important technical feature of this caliber is the escapement with two impulse wheels, which was developed on the basis of the famous échappement naturel invented by Abraham-Louis Breguet in 1789 and was the first escapement to function without lubrication. As the range of in-house calibers evolved, Laurent Ferrier explored the possibilities of styles other than the classical one he had started with. Perhaps the most notable innovation was the sporty, luxurious style that Mr. Laurent Ferrier was familiar with from his work at Patek Philippe and his involvement in the launch of the Aquanaut, which Ferrier was instrumental in developing in 1997. The 2019 Tourbillon Grand Sport was the first luxury sports watch in Laurent Ferrier’s collection and was equipped with an in-house caliber with tourbillon and double balance spring.
REASONS TO BUY
The Laurent Ferrier Sport Auto Blue Titanium is a very interesting and attractive alternative to the standard designs in the luxury sports watch segment. What is very attractive about this watch is the combination of typical Laurent Ferrier design features such as the gently rounded, pebble-shaped case, the slim hands in the unique brand design, the mini rotor automatic caliber in a beautiful design with haute horlogerie finishing. Of particular interest is the commemorative microtext engraved on the mini rotor, which recounts the high point of the career of Mr. Ferrier, the founder of the brand, as a racing driver.
ABOUT THIS WATCH
This Sport Auto Blue Titanium was launched in February 2022 as the first automatic model in the Sport collection. The watch is powered by the currently new LF270.01, an ideologically correct, modern movement with a luxurious finish, automatic winding and a power reserve of three days. The movement is equipped with a mini-rotor automatic winding system and, unlike the FBN229.01, Laurent Ferrier’s first mini-rotor movement, has a Swiss lever escapement.
The caliber LF270.01 is finished to meet the expectations of the connoisseur of haute horlogerie and therefore makes a very pleasant impression. The movement’s advanced technical features include a free-sprung balance with regulating screws, a hairspring with Breguet overcoil and a Geneva-style hairspring stud cap. Finishing touches include hand-polished chamfers on the bridges with neatly finished, sharp inner and outer corners, engraved and gilded inscriptions, polished screw heads and the beautifully beveled and polished recesses for jewels, screws and pins. A special feature of this caliber, which was clearly designed for the Sport collection, is the special design of the platinum mini-rotor with a microtext in relief on the inner zone. This microtext commemorates the event that, as Mr. Ferrier himself says, marked the pinnacle of his motor racing career. It is about June 9, 1979, on the Le Mans race track, when Laurent Ferrier, his racing fellow driver François Trisconi and François Servanin, who later co-founded the Laurent Ferrier company, finished third in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in a Porsche 935.
As for the design of the Sport Auto Blue Titanium, it is in the style of the Laurent Ferrier collection since its launch. The soft contours of the titanium case and the integrated bracelet, with a large proportion of brushed surfaces but also with polished bevels on the bezel and the sides of the bracelet links, are complemented by a typically Laurent Ferrier dainty but rather large and easy-to-use turban-shaped crown. The elongated “teardrop” style hands, which are given a soft, streamlined shape, are thoroughly polished to finally achieve a cylindrical surface. In combination with the textured, matte blue dial with gradient effect and the “swimming pool” date window, it gives the watch a special charm and recognition value. In addition, the Sport Auto Blue Titanium fits comfortably on the wrist according to the rules of the luxury sports watch genre, while the titanium case and bracelet do not weigh down the hand and generally promise the pleasure of wearing the watch as a daily companion.
