The UR-EMC caliber was developed by Urwerk in 2013–2014 as the world’s first mechanical movement with an electronic monitoring system. EMC – for Electro Mechanical Control – is Urwerk’s concept for a mechanical, high-precision watch that allows its owner to monitor the beat of the movement. The EMC system also makes it easy to adjust the timekeeping by turning a timing screw on the caseback. In addition to the conventional displays – hours and minutes, seconds and power reserve – there is a performance indicator that shows the accuracy of the movement in seconds. It is activated by pressing a button on the lower left side of the case. The capstan on the right-hand side of the case should be used to charge the battery, which stores the energy for the sensor and the performance indicator. The Urwerk UR-EMC was first introduced in 2013. In the same year, Urwerk was awarded the “Mechanical Exception” and “Innovation” prizes for this watch at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève, the most prestigious award in modern watchmaking.
The UR-EMC Time Hunter seems to be a good opportunity for the collector to get access to the rare, technical and militaristic side of the Urwerk talent. Thanks to its eye-catching and unusual design and unique functionality, which combines traditional mechanical precision watchmaking with a first-class electronic complication that displays precision and balance amplitude, this watch demonstrates the ingenuity and innovative thinking that characterizes Urwerk dtyle in watchmaking. The UR-EMC Time Hunter occupies a unique place in the history of Urwerk. Far from being a standard product, this watch is an extremely attractive, unusual, very rare and charismatic timepiece that gives you the opportunity to enjoy the best that this independent watch brand has to offer.
Three years later, the brand presented the UR-EMC Time Hunter, a new-generation watch equipped with an improved UR-EMC2 caliber. In addition to the performance indicator, this movement has another electronic indicator that shows the amplitude of the balance wheel – an extremely important indication of the movement’s “state of health”. In addition, Martin Frey, the creative head of the brand, has updated the design of the watch. The shape of the case of the UR-EMC Time Hunter is the same as the previous version, but the dial has been significantly changed. While the original UR-EMC had the upper part of the case divided into four dials with all the displays spread out, the UR-EMC Time Hunter has a more traditional style, if you can say that about Urwerk watches. Instead of the image of an exotic, futuristic device that the UR-EMC conveyed, the UR-EMC Time Hunter adopted a different, technical, instrumental and sometimes militaristic style, closer to the pragmatic perception of precision mechanical watches. This transition was realized through the use of a single dial opening with a dominant main dial with hour and minute hands as well as small seconds, a power reserve and a combined performance and balance amplitude display in the corners.
The technical, instrumental and somewhat militaristic style displayed by the UR-EMC Time Hunter sets this watch apart from the rest of the collection, which is largely dedicated to the futuristic luxury design direction in which Urwerk is primarily at home. The separate stylistic positioning is appropriate for a watch that interacts directly with its owner, who can find out about the condition and accuracy of the movement via an electronic complication and even intervene in the inner workings of the watch by adjusting the accuracy.
This UR-EMC Time Hunter was released in 2016 in a limited edition of 15 pieces in a titanium and steel case that offers a monochromatic grey and black color scheme. The bright color accents of the dial – yellow numerals, white and red markers – are not only an argument for the clarity of the displays, which improves readability, but also elements of technical and military style that fit the overall look of this watch.
