Gerald Genta

Perpetual Calendar with Minute Repeater sold

DETAILS

Gérald Genta, who is considered one of the most important modern watch designers and even the inventor of the profession, has worked with many renowned Swiss watch manufacturers such as Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, IWC, Universal Genève, Omega, Bulgari, Cartier and others over the course of his career. He is world-famous as the creator of the Nautilus and Royal Oak designs and founded his own brand in 1969. The Gérald Genta brand is widely known for its outstanding, daring, sometimes provocative designs, its fine craftsmanship, but also for its complicated mechanical watches, which are mainly developed in-house – from perpetual calendars, tourbillons, minute repeaters and combinations of such complications to extraordinary, over-complicated Grande Sonnerie models. To develop his own complications, Gérald Genta collaborated with Pierre-Michel Golay, who was Gérald Genta's chief watchmaker and technical director for many years from 1973 to the mid-1990s. His first complication was the perpetual calendar module developed in 1974, which was designed to fit numerous basic calibers, including the ultra-thin self-winding Frédéric Piguet 71 caliber, the in-house minute repeater (since 1981, like the present watch), the in-house tourbillon (since 1988) and even quartz calibers.

REASONS TO BUY

In our opinion, this Minute Repeater Perpetual Calendar Ref. G2015.4 can be considered as one of the cornerstones for the collector interested in the watchmaking art of Gérald Genta. The generally accepted view of Mr. Genta's talent as a watch designer requires an essential addition, namely his vision of modern craftsmanship, which includes the development of fine calibers and classic complications that enabled him to offer thin, elegant and complicated models with high-end decorative finishes on the movements. All of this is directly related to this watch. The combination of minute repeater and perpetual calendar is considered a classic of traditional watchmaking, and in this watch we find one of the highest expressions of this highly esteemed tradition.

ABOUT THIS WATCH

Another milestone on the way to the present Minute Repeater Perpetual Calendar Ref. G2015.4 watch dates back to 1981, when Pierre-Michel Golay developed an ultra-thin minute repeater with manual winding that was only 2.72 mm thick. Combined as the base caliber with the in-house perpetual calendar module, which was also remarkably thin, it enabled the brand to introduce a thin, elegant minute repeater and perpetual calendar watches in the same year.

The practicality and reliability of such a watch was optimized by other useful options, most notably the activation of the minute repeater by a pusher at the 9 o'clock position instead of a sliding lever traditionally used for minute repeaters. This made Gérald Genta's minute repeater wristwatches water-resistant, which was unique at the time.

This watch has a round 35 mm Empire case with Vendome lugs, the characteristic polished "double pomme" bezel and a cylindrical caseband hand-engraved with the brand logo and the serial number of the watch. The watch is powered by an in-house double complication movement and features a white matte dial with arrangement of sub-dials typical for Gérald Genta perpetual calendars. This also includes the brand’s signature moonphase sub-dial at 12 o’clock, which is adorned with a lapis lazuli disc. The screw-down exhibition caseback reveals the magnificent in-house minute repeater caliber, whose gold-plated mainplate and bridges are hand-engraved with floral rococo motifs. This type of finishing of the movement is typical of Gérald Genta's elaborate complications models from the early days until the early 2000s. The high level of craftsmanship is confirmed by the Geneva Seal, the most prestigious seal of quality in the industry, which marks both mainplate and the barrel bridge.
